Pain when cycling

Pain while cycling

Tailbone pain, back pain, neck pain, knee pain, or particularly uncomfortable pain in the buttocks and intimate area: the list of complaints that can occur during or after cycling is long. In fact, every second cyclist experiences pain sooner or later. We take a look at the most common causes and reasons for pain during or after cycling and explain how you can successfully avoid them.

Sitting discomfort after cycling

Sitting discomfort or saddle soreness ranks at the top of the list of the most common problems during or after cycling. The phenomenon is easy to explain: the periosteum around the sit bones and tailbone becomes irritated due to significant and sometimes unfamiliar friction. At the same time, blood circulation in the perineal area—where many blood vessels and nerves are located—can be reduced. As a result, in addition to classic pain, numbness in the buttocks and genital area may occur. Men in particular are often affected, as the prostate is especially sensitive. In the worst case, even sexual performance may be impaired. Preventing sitting discomfort while cycling is not easy, as sitting is inherent to conventional cycling. Special saddle padding usually provides only short-term relief. Anyone who frequently experiences discomfort in the saddle, lower back, or buttock area after cycling—or who already has prostate issues—should therefore consider switching to a stand-up bike. The positive training effects of a so-called stand-up bike are more comprehensive and often more intense than those of traditional cycling, while the issue of sitting discomfort is completely eliminated due to the absence of a saddle.

Neck and back pain while cycling

Back and neck pain during or after cycling are also common complaints and, again, largely inherent to the nature of conventional cycling. When riding a traditional bicycle—especially when climbing hills—the upper body assumes a hunched and unnatural posture. Sooner or later, this can have a significant impact on the entire musculoskeletal system, including the muscles, pelvis, and spine. Sharp pain and muscle tension are among the milder issues that can result from frequent cycling.

Cycling without pain – the solution is a stand-up bike

By riding a stand-up bike such as our ElliptiGO SUB models or our elliptical bikes, classic cycling-related discomfort and pain become a thing of the past. In addition to eliminating the saddle—one of the main causes of discomfort in the buttocks and tailbone area—the automatically upright and natural body position ensures that the entire back, including the surrounding muscles, is strengthened sustainably. As a result, your training becomes not only healthier for your bones and joints, but also more effective.
