Exercise during Pregnancy and after Childbirth
Back-Friendly exercise after a herniated disc
Anyone who has experienced a herniated disc or even undergone disc surgery often wonders when they can start exercising again. And of course: which types of sport are back-friendly and therefore suitable?
We answer the most important questions for all herniated disc patients who want to regain their fitness as quickly as possible. However, please remember to always consult your doctor beforehand.
When i can resume exercise after a herniated disc?
The symptoms of a herniated disc are often divided into three phases. During the first and most painful phase, exercise is out of the question. Only in phase 2, when pain occurs only occasionally or with certain movements, can you start considering physical activity again. Important: Always speak with your doctor before resuming exercise after a herniated disc or disc surgery. In phases 2 and 3, it is essential to stabilize the spine and surrounding muscles while improving intramuscular coordination. This not only supports recovery but also actively helps prevent further issues with the discs, the cervical spine, or the back in general.
Which types of exercise are suitable after a herniated disc?
Cycling is proven to be one of the best types of exercise after a herniated disc. It keeps the spine mobile, promotes nutrient supply to the discs, and does not create impact stress. Unlike jogging, running, horseback riding, or many team sports, cycling allows you to train your musculoskeletal system gently while regaining fitness efficiently. In particular, targeted yet low-impact training on a stand-up bike is ideal for making a successful comeback.
Cycling after a herniated Disc – a back-friendly sport
As early as six weeks after disc surgery, you may be able to resume cycling—provided your doctor does not advise otherwise based on your individual diagnosis. At the beginning, choose flat routes without inclines. It is important to avoid any jolts to the back—so a mountain bike tour should not be on your agenda just yet. Riding an ElliptiGO SUB stand-up bike is particularly beneficial. Your body remains in an upright, natural position at all times. This protects the back while stabilizing the (cervical) spine in its intended alignment. As a result, you not only improve your overall fitness but also actively help prevent further back and disc problems. Simply schedule a test ride and experience the difference for yourself.
